What is team building?
Team building is the ability in which employees are motivated and form a team that stays, works and achieves tasks together.
Corporate Team Building
Why do corporate business' run team building events?
Building A Cohesive Team:
To be a good leader for a team you will have to make sure that you have built the most cohesive team possible. The way in which we measure a cohesive team is by how well and close the team are working together to complete any task that is given to them. The more cohesive the team the more likely they will complete the task given to a better standard as well as possibly completing it quicker than per usual. Teamwork is key when wanting a successful business or organisation because the team needs to be supportive for each other. When a leader is in the process of building a cohesive team they will go through different steps to ensure that they can get the most cohesive team possible with the options given to them. The steps are; recruitment, induction, training & coaching (mentoring), knowledge, team & individual performance, target setting, dealing with conflict, and recognising the individual.
What a leader needs to be good at:
The recruitment stage is in place so that the leader is able to find the perfect person that will best benefit the team.
The induction stage is when the individual that is selected is introduced to the team dynamics and how they work together.
The third stage, which is training and coaching, is where the person selected learns the way and routines of the team.
The mentoring stage allows the individual to learn through feedback and the leader is able to monitor the progress of the individual, making sure everything is ok.
The final stage is the knowledge stage and this is where the team leader has to understand the teams strengths and weaknesses as a whole but also all the individuals strengths and weaknesses.
A leader must be able to deal with any conflicts that the group may have and will have to recognise and understand the situation. This will then allow the leader to resolve the issues and then should spot the possible career progression that the individuals may be able to get. If the conflict is bad within the group it could potentially lead to a group turnover and this is when a group either gains a new member to the group or loses one.
There are things that the team as well as the individual will carry out and one example is target setting. This is important for the team leader to set a team target as this will set a performance standard for the team. Using target setting for each individual will also help to measure the performance of each member and this will help to monitor the progress of the team and the individual. Finally this will help the development of the team because if they are struggling the team leader will be able to offer support.

Types of Teamwork
There are different types of teamwork when working as a team; formal, informal, size of teams, temporary, and permanent.
A formal team is when there is a set purpose for why the team is working together. For example a team working together is the police department. This is because there job is to apply safety to the public and make sure that justice is served. This job require an interview process as well as a training course. Formal teams are described as professional and will often have one leader to represent the team. There is another type of a formal team, which is the quality circle. This is when a group of people, generally 8-12, will have regular meetings to discuss ways in which they can improve their team to perform better.
An informal team is when a group is formed naturally or by the people that wasn't selected by an organisation or a business. These people would work together to help benefit themselves in order to achieve a common goal. These teams would be less organised and aren't having to follow a lot of rules like a formal team does.
When creating a team the size will come into the selection mix. The way that the size of the team is selected is dependant on the task and the time frame it has to be completed in. The size of the team that is most optimum for most tasks is five. This is because it prevents arguments in decision making as well as avoiding alienation and errors within the information.
When a temporary team is formed for a short amount of time it is normally for a small task to be completed quickly. For example selecting a few students in a school to create an anti-bullying advert over a week period. After the task is complete the group will break up and go their separate ways.
A permanent team is a team that are working together continuously as their tasks are kept on being created. An example of this would be a military team as they have constant roles and jobs they have to complete each day.

Benefits of a Team:
A team is able to set a target and the monitor it. This is a benefit because it allows a clear vision of what everyone within the team has to work for and achieve. The targets don't have to be complex ones but can also be simple, for example to sell fifteen laptops a month. Not only can the targets be optimised for the business but can also be targets for each individual. This will allow the team leader to monitor the team and ensure everyone is working hard at their target and can also see how far they have gone with the target. This could be whether they are working behind time, on time or ahead of time to achieve the set target.
When a team leader monitors the performance of their team over a set period of time it allows them to understand the strengths and weaknesses within the team. For example is a team has been set both individual and team targets, the leader will be able to review everyone's progress individually and as a team to see whether they are close to achieving the target or not.
A leader must ensure that their team doesn't have any alienation within the group because this doesn't benefit the team as it means that the individual will not likely be working as hard as they could. This is because when an individual is alienated they feel excluded from the group and wonder whether they should be a part of the team. This is why reduction of alienation is important and benefits a group so much. When it is reduced everyone in the group feels like they belong and that they are able to work together to strive to their goals without having any problems and conflicts within the team.
Fostering innovation is really important with a team and benefits them greatly because the team is encouraged to be innovative with ideas to enhance the performance of the team. When a team is being innovative it will benefit them because it gives a feeling of empowerment as they will be coming up with an idea that is more exciting than those in a team that doesn't foster any innovation. In the end the team will select the innovative idea because it will draw more attention in a good way.
Fostering Innovation:
This is when people in the team are encouraged to be innovative and come up with ideas for the group. By doing this it gives people a sense of empowerment as they are the ones coming up with the ideas for the group and that it is their ideas that are exciting those in the team and in the end their idea that the team will be using.
Within a group it is very beneficial to share expertise as everyone within a group will have a specific skill set that will help to achieve the ultimate goal or target. This is because different ways that the task will be completed can be combined to come up with the best idea. Whilst sharing expertise the knowledge within the group will be a lot higher and it will make the cohesion within the team greater.
Another benefit of a team is that they are able to deal with changes that may occur to or within the group. This could be such events like a new person joining the team or having to change a way that a task is to be carried out due to too many obstacles. Generally individuals within a team will be resistant to having to change the way in which they were working because evidently the changes are for the best interest of the team and achieving the target. By learning to adapt to change will benefit the team.
To be a good team they must be able to identify and develop the talent within the group because that talent will be able to come up with different and possibly innovative ideas on the same topic. When a team or an individual identify the talent within the group they will want to use and develop the talent so that it will become stronger and more beneficial to the team. The team leader will encourage the members of the team to develop their talents to ensure that they are working to the best of their ability.
